Original letter from someone who wrote in 'say no to plastic bags' (group in fb and orkut). I have edited it and given it to 2 of the shops near my house.
Letter to shop keepers and shoppers:-
We are working on solutions to the enormous problem of solid waste. Polythene bags in garbage cause endless difficulties in management and disposal. Truckloads of plastic garbage are dumped into lake beds, and burnt creating toxic ash which then washes into the lakes causing slow death of birds and aquatic life in them; and slower disease and death in those who eat and drink from these water bodies - us.
Action points:
1) Intimating to customers the proposed withdrawal of Plastic carry bags by a Notice at your outlets
2) Offer of re-usable, less-polluting cloth ( Jute/Canvas) bags in two or three sizes, at a price
3) A scheme of refunding the amount charged for such bags if and when the customer returns them to your outlet
The idea is to encourage customers to get into the habit of bringing their own bags while shopping, while stopping the use of plastic bags, and providing creative and workable alternatives to both. The only other change we would need to bring in is a numbered storage-rack at your outlets' check-out counter, for bags being brought by customers to be returned or re-used .
We also need to move towards packaging fresh produce in bio-degradable cellophane or wax-paper as a further step to reducing plastic waste.
We look forward to your continued co-operation in helping return this city and its environs to a cleaner, greener world.
